KiTA Spreading The Message Of Conservation Through The Hosting Of TEY Team
KiTA hosted the kids and teachers of SMK Tenghilan Tuaran when they visited Kampung Bilit of lower Kinabatangan on 24-25 July 2015.
The kids and teachers of SMK Tenghilan are the finalist for the Toyota Eco Youth, representing Sabah to compete in national level where judging will be done in September.
The Toyota Eco Youth (TEY) program was conceived in 2001 with collaboration from Ministry of Education. TEY rocketed to national level in 2002 when 16 schools from each state and Federal Territories signing on.
Youth of today holds our future in their hands. The more they know, the more aware they become. This program aims to instill environment awareness by promoting environmental conservation among the school kids.
Mr Johnny Lim, VP of KiTA met the team as they set off from Sepilok to Kampung Bilit. He gave them a briefing, explaining to them the importance of conservation and how KiTA plays a role in the conservation efforts along Kinabatangan.
The team then proceeded to Nature Lodge Kinabatangan, a member lodge of KiTA in Kampung Bilit where they spend a night.
While there, participated in a night walk, 3 rivers cruises and also a tree planting activity near the Oxbow lake of Kampung Bilit on Saturday morning.
“KiTA is pleased to host this team and to show them first-hand what conservation can achieve in the preservation of environment. It is a short trip since they are taking time off their week long school holiday but we have planned a customised program for them so I am certain they will benefit greatly from it” said Mr Johnny Lim. “This is the first education awareness program that KiTA is doing and we hope to do more in the near future. The main aim is to create awareness of KiTA and the need for conserving the Lower Kinabatangan area.” Added Johnny
“We found out that the Lower Kinabatangan area has been gazetted as a wildlife sanctuary and it is through hard work and continuous efforts from many stakeholders in the area that we can continue to enjoy viewing wildlife in this area” said Ms. Jane Thing, one of the teachers in the TEY team. “KiTA has in fact contributed a lot in the area. As tourism stakeholders, they have contributed back to the community and this is ecotourism and we have learnt tremendously from this trip.”
Kampunng Bilit is the last stop for the TEY team. During their 5 days education trip to Sandakan, they have also visited Pulau Libaran to see the turtle hatchery and Sepilok to visit the Orang Utan Rehabilitation centre and the Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Centre. Thereafter, the team return to Tenghilan in Tuaran.
