UT-Kita-59 Residents of Kampung Sungai Lokan are now more aware of the importance of protecting the environment, according to their spokesman. Adbul Karim Otoh, 46, said a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to this effect was signed by the villagers and tour operator, Uncle Tan Wildlife Adventures Sdn Bhd in December 2011. “We feel fortunate that our village of about 300 residents was chosen by the tour company to be developed, environmentally protected and monitored systematically,” he told Bernama at a gathering here yesterday between the two parties. He said through the MoU, villagers gained exposure and knowledge on environmental conservation while participating in community activities such as cleaning up rivers, roads and jetty areas. Sports and social activities had also created greater rapport between the villagers and the tour company which is a member of the Kinabatangan-Corridor of Life Tourism Operators Association (KiTA), he said. “Some of the villagers even managed to gain employment through the MoU,” he added. Meanwhile KiTA President Alexander Yee said the association would help to bring about improvements for areas and residents. He stressed it was important for the residents to continuously give their cooperation in regard to the MoU for mutual benefit. “Both sides must work together in curbing activities such as poisoning the river resources, hunting endangered wildlife and illegal logging, which are destructive to nature and the ecology” he said.
