Introduction of this seminar :
Last August 2015, a visitor survey was conducted jointly by Universiti Malaysia Sabah and Murdoch University Perth on some 400 tourists over a month in some of the lodges in Abai, Sukau, Bilit, and Sg. Lokan at the invitation of Mr Albert Teo, Organizing Chairman representing KiTA and with the suppport and organisation of KiTA and its members and UMS to evaluate the experience of tourists regarding Sabah’s global positioning and branding both as ecotourism and wildlife tourism destination generally and Kinabatangan specifically. It is also to ensure the long term sustainabilitiy of wildlife tourism as the destination become more popular and as number of tourists increase.

The lead researcher is Professor Dr. David Newsome and supported by Dr. Kate Rodger and the datas was collated and analysed by Dr. Joanne Pearce all from Murdoch University. The results will be announced in a seminar to be held in Kota Kinabalu on 7th September 2016 and Sandakan on 8th September 2016. This project was jointly funded by Murdoch University to come to Kinabatangan to conduct the research as well as the evaluation of the datas collected.

They will be doing a presentation to Sabah Tourism Board and a Courtesy Call to the Minister of Tourism on their research findings which may be very valuable for marketing purpose to promote Sabah as a world class ecotourism/wildlife destination.

During this trip, Murdoch will be doing a MoU with UMS signing ceremony for greater collaboration on research projects between the two universities in the future. On a separate note KiTA has also agreed to be the research partner with UMS for research proposal title : Sustainable Ecotourism Development and Operations at Lower Kinabatangan as Premier Competitive Ecotourism Destination with a amount of contribution from both UMS and KiTA for this project under the leadership of Head of Tourism Development Unit, BIMP-EAGA.
